Picture this – images for social media

Let’s talk about a few simple but critical details for social media images in 2019. We’ll stick to images being posted in order to share a link or drive traffic to your site, because there are tons of specifics for sizing profile images, cover images and business page banners to name a few.

Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn recommend you size your images to 1200 x 628 pixels for link posts, like for your blog. That’s an aspect ratio of 1.91:1. If your image is already smaller than this, best practice is to size it to the largest scale with what you have left. Enlarging an image will often produce blurry or pixelated quality. Calculate the best size for your image by multiplying the width by .524 to get the height.

Another option is a 1200 pixels square. Square images work well on Facebook and Instagram. Twitter is accepting of it too. It’s even good for Pinterest if you’re on there!

Here’s a quick cheat sheet for reference:

  • Facebook:  1200 x 628
  • Twitter: 1200 x 628
  • Instagram: 1080 x 1080
  • LinkedIn: 1200 x 628
  • Google+: 1080 x 566

As always, the best file formats to upload for social media are PNG, JPEG, or GIFs.
