Aim, focus, and shoot – capture quality photos using your mobile device

Taking a quality photo is important, especially if it’s going to be used to represent a company outing or event on a website or social media page. Most of us use our mobile devices to take pictures, as we are constantly on the go. It’s often best to take a photo with an actual camera, but you can still take quality photos using a mobile device.

In order to ensure that your photo is professional and high quality, here are a few best practices to get you started:

  1. We don’t do this often enough, but be sure to clean off your lens to ensure no dust or dirt affects your photos.
  2. Most smartphones allow you to tap on your screen and focus a yellow, square box to accurately capture your subject matter.
  3. If your phone allows, setting the brightness and contrast levels before you take a photo will lighten or darken a photo depending on the amount of existing light in a room/outside. Most devices offer filter features for this.
  4. Zooming into a photo on your device can actually lessen the quality of your photo. Instead move closer to your subject to get a better shot.
  5. Trying to take a photo while in motion often creates blurred streaks. A steady hand or using a flat surface as a prop to take the photo allows for a clear picture.
  6. Avoid distracting backgrounds—the audience often has a hard time focusing on a photo when there are too many things going on that takes a way from the primary focus. It often helps to use a plain background.
  7. Take more than one photo of the same subject matter, but from different angles. Chances are that you will have a great photo from the batch to use.
  8. Using your devices gridlines can allow you to have a more balanced shot and position your subject matter properly.
  9. Look for symmetry—taking a photo of a building or person where the subject is shown very far to one side often takes away from the photo and looks disproportionate.
